YOLO! You’ve heard it, right? The battle cry to take advantage of every moment of your life. Live it to the fullest!

The truth is, most of the time, it’s just a slogan we say in passing. A joke under our breath. Because we’re far too busy to actually embrace a YOLO life.

But what happens when we actually take stock of how many days we might have left on this Earth and make a sort of peace with death? Will we begin to live differently?

Instead of making bucket lists, will we make a step-by-step pathway to actually grab onto that vacation, that big move, that new business?

Jodi Wellman of Four Thousand Mondays has the answers, and she’s breaking it down this week on Bound + Determined.

She’s spent YEARS studying memento mori (the fact that we’re all GOING to die. There is a 100% chance), and even wrote the book You Only Die Once: How to Make it to the End with No Regrets, about the fact that we get about 4,000 weeks in our lives, and it’s up to us how we spend them. How much life do we want in our lives?

You may think that a conversation about death and how we want to live our lives is a serious one—but I can assure you that this podcast episode is full of fun and laughs.

While Jodi’s work is steeped in research, she makes this conversation (and her book) so digestible that you’ll find yourself laughing along the way—and getting some clear action steps.

Jodi is a speaker, author, assistant instructor in the Master of Applied Positive Psychology program at the University of Pennsylvania, and founder of Four Thousand Mondays. Her book is called “You Only Die Once” which made Adam Grant’s Summer Reading List and is a Next Big Idea Club must-read. Jodi has been featured in Oprah Daily, Fast Company, CNBC, Forbes, Psychology Today, The Los Angeles Times, and more. Jodi’s TEDx talk is called How Death Can Bring You Back to Life; with over 1.3 million views, it is the 14th most-watched TEDx talk released in 2022!

In this podcast episode we discuss:

  • Why Jodi felt compelled to study death and regrets
  • Why taking a pre-mortem assessment can open your eyes to the ways you aren’t living
  • Why habits are the blunting of our aliveness
  • Why death reflection can actually bring us more joy and build good character
  • How Jodi found her literary agent through this podcast!

And so much more.

I loved this conversation so much, and I highly encourage you to grab a copy of You Only Die Once.
