We spend a lot of time around here talking about the creative process, writer’s block, and staying connected to our writing journey, but sometimes, we feel like we have nothing left in the tank.
When we’re running on empty, the creative bursts and flickering lightbulbs of an idea may be few and far between. We’ve got to take a pause. Tend to ourselves. Get rooted and come back to neutral again.
Some people creatively thrive in times of change—they process on the page. Sometimes, that’s me! Just not this time. And it’s okay if you’re running on empty, too. And it’s great if the words are pouring out of you. There is no right or wrong here.
It’s no mistake that when I begin the process of creating a book idea and book proposal with my clients I say “Surrender the timeline”. Surrendering is just about all you can do when molding an idea from thin air. That surrender also comes in the grace we show ourselves on the days when we can’t even conjure up our name or remember what we had for breakfast.
This week I have a quick solo episode for you on Creating Through the Inevitable Changes of Life—I hope you’ll give it a listen!
I also hope you’ll join me at the Aspiring Authors Assembly on the 19th at 1pm ET to discuss where you are, how you’re feeling, how writing is feeling for you right now, and get some support on moving through and forward (if that’s your choice). We will make time for a writing prompt this session. My pal Mara Glatzel recently sent an email reminding folks of the need for tending, nurturing, and PLAY. Let the Aspiring Authors Assembly help you with all three!
