I don’t know about you, but when something is important to me, I want to be GOOD at it. Actually, I want to be GREAT.
When a scheduling error in the 7th grade landed me in Beginning Band instead of Home Ec, I was annoyed, It was going to take them a week or two to get my schedule worked out. Ugh.
My band teacher asked me on the first day if I had any experience with an instrument.
“Just a bit of piano”, I responded reluctantly.
He handed me drumsticks. What was I going to do with those?!
Interestingly enough, my Dad was a drummer. I grew up sitting at the foot of the bass drum while he played at events, weddings and holidays. No car ride was complete without dashboard drumming (that’s still true today).
I was given a challenge, and after a few days I realized it was pretty damn fun. In fact, I requested to stay in band, and committed myself to learning as much as I could. Turns out a girl drummer was shocking and cool at the time. I was up for the challenge.
I studied, I listened, I asked for support. I went all in.

Over a decade of being a drummer, that commitment landed me some of the most incredible opportunities. I was nominated by the California Governor at the time to travel Europe with a small band comprised of the best musicians throughout the state. We performed in 8 countries in 12 days—it was amazing!
That commitment also landed me the talent award in the Miss Teen California scholarship pageant. A story for another email!
If I hadn’t created a process for myself to get better, I probably would have thrown in the towel after the first week.
